Youth

The Bass Federation of Michigan Youth Division

The primary purposes of The Bass Federation of MI are to promote conservation, be involved with youth, promote the sport of fishing. The future of our sport depends upon the fostering of values and principles of the outdoors that helped create this country and the resources that we enjoy and protect.

By getting our youth involved in outdoor activities we fulfill the mission of building tomorrows anglers by passing on our values and principles through education and participation. We do this through youth programs such as our Jr clubs and programs like Reel Kids Casting among other programs while providing support, when necessary, to TBF national’s Student Angler Federation High School Fishing and college fishing. If you have questions about these activities, please contact The Bass Federation of Michigan Youth Director.

You can check the events calendar for youth activities information or the latest youth news.

The Bass Federation of Michigan Jr State Championship

Any child between the ages of 11 – 18 can fish in the annual TBF of Michigan Jr. State Championship. Entry fee is $20 for TBF youth club members or $25 for non-members (which gives them a TBF youth membership). There are two age groups – 11-14 and 15-18 – that compete against each other. Adult boater volunteers take out two children per boat during the event – 1 from each age group. Each child can fish from the front of the boat on their spots for half the fishing day. The adult volunteer does not help with fishing spots, but does all the boat driving. All general tournament safety rules are followed.

At the weigh-in, the top angler by total weight from each age group is the Jr. State Champion. The two Jr champions then move on to the next level of competition where they can qualify for the National Guard Junior World Championship (NGJWC).

The NGJWC is the premier junior fishing tournament in the world and it is held each year in conjunction with the Forest Wood Cup, professional fishing’s richest event. Junior Anglers are treated to 4 days of action packed events which include a series of educational seminars, a 2 day tournament format and complete access to the National Guard Fun Zone and the FLW Cup Event with a shot at valuable scholarship packages. Check the events calendar and youth news for information on the next Jr. State Championship, or contact the TBF of Michigan Youth Director for more information.

Reel Kids Casting Competitions

The Reel Kids Casting Program is a casting skills accuracy challenge for young anglers across the country!  The Reel Kids Program is in many cases the first opportunity that many kids have to be introduced to the great sport of fishing. At events like sport and outdoor shows across the country and in many schools these programs are giving kids the chance to experience what it is really like to handle a fishing rod and reel. They test their skills in the art of Casting, Flipping, and Pitching a plastic jig to a very colorful target.

Check the events calendar and youth news for information on upcoming Reel Kids Casting competitions, or contact the TBF of Michigan Youth Director for more information.
